So we grabbed our neighbors off the street and asked to do a little training with their lab.
My wife Amy saw that they were struggling and thought I might be able to help them out. I’ve worked with quite a few labs and thought that this dog might turn around quickly.
Here is the transcript of what happened. ——————————————-
He’s really bad. He can’t walk on the leash, he’s very destructive when we leave him home. He likes to destroy our new baby’s toys, and he is just very in need of attention at all times. We have a new baby. He jumps on everybody and licks them right in the face.
That seems like a common Lab thing.
Did you guys run or something?
No he pulls and it chokes hime. The whole time we’re walking he’s dragging me the whole time. Well you saw the whole way here.
Yeah, they pulled the whole way here so they’re a little worn out. We’re going to see how well he sits and then we’re going to have him stay in the sit.
Harley come’re Sit, Sit down, sit. He’s not going to do it. Harley sit, sit down. It normally works if you have a treat. Harley sit.
They’re still just dogs, so they’ll just do dog things. But I can be very consistent if I want her to lay down somewhere. You want to feel it? (Referring to the e-collar stimulation)
We’ve done it. We’ve done the top level of our shock collar before we put it on him.
level 1, level 2, and i’m pushing it a lot I’m not just kinda like scared to push it, level 3. I felt that one. So She felt it on a 3 and he felt it on a 5, meaning if we were only working on a level 3 it would work for you, but you wouldn’t get any benefit out of it. So that’s why it’s important that this is adjustable and we can adjust for different circumstances. Can i take him from you. You guys can just stay right there.
He’s tired because he pulled the whole way here. I thought you were going to fall over.
Oh, but he still want’s to give me a kiss. Hi, look at you.
Darrel doesn’t mind dog slobber. All the dogs get trainer crushes on him.
Unless it’s like one of those Tibetan Mastiffs or something. That can really slime you. That just slime you. (joking) Hey buddy, we’ll see how much go he has in him. Come on.
You know when Harley doesn’t like it because he starts scratching his neck.
So He’s just conditioning him to start paying attention with the (remote) collar.
And you always want your dog sitting like that.
This is nonsense.
I know. See his head up like that? And he sat down so he’s just going to put him back in a sit or move him. The cool thing is he knows his commands, he just doesn’t know them with distractions.
What happens is when we go for a walk or something he gets so excited it doesn’t matter what level you have the shock collar on or anything. Oh ya. He’ll go through it. He just goes. We walked him from day one as a puppy. At first, I will say, he wouldn’t walk at all he would just sit down, so we’re like “come on” so we would drag him.
Some distractions running by.
He’s going to look pretty good for me here pretty quick. So I got him sitting nicely. So now I’m going to move him around just a little bit. Losing his attention. It’s just you won’t be able to just muscle through it with a collar (referring to the pulling) the problems, you’ll have to think about it a little more. I’ts just a very basic thing. We should be able to sit him anywhere.
And he purposefully walked over to Dancer (the other dog). So If I see a dog barking at a fence I go “ooh I’m going to go train my dog on that”. I’m just going to make him sit like this. Lets up the ante here. Sit.
